A 2007 Golden Gloves gold medalist, Wilder turned pro in 2008. "The Bronze Bomber" was WBC heavyweight champion from 2015-2020, a run that ended when Tyson Fury beat him via TKO. Wilder has since gone 1-1, his last fight a knockout win against Robert Helenius in October 2022. Despite not fighting in over a year, Wilder believes Parker will be his 43rd win via the power punch.
A three-time gold medalist, Parker made his pro debut in 2012. Parker won the WBO heavyweight title in 2016 against Andy Ruiz Jr. but lost the belt against Anthony Joshua in 2018. He went on a six-fight win streak soon after, lost against Joe Joyce in 2022, and has won three in a row since. Going 3-0 in 2023, Parker looks to avoid Wilder’s knockout power and return to the top of title contention.
The Wilder fight will serve as the co-main event with Anthony Joshua fighting Otto Wallin. If all goes according to plan, the card will set up an even bigger fight between Wilder and Joshua on March 9, 2024, per boxing insider Dan Rafael.
That will certainly give Wilder a little added motivation against an opponent who is not as accomplished as himself. On the other hand, Parker will look to play the role of spoiler and ruin the heavyweight superfight.
With Joshua on the card and a light heavyweight title fight between Dmitry Bivol and Lyndon Arthur, there's plenty of competition for who is going to stand out.
The American has boxed less than one full round since the epic conclusion of his iconic trilogy with Tyson Fury in 2021, placing a lot of pressure on him this weekend. Parker, like his opponent a former world heavyweight champion, will be a stern test in Riyadh, even if Wilder’s power remains as dangerous as ever.
